Professor (Dr.) Balbir S. Tomar is widely known for his zeal to excel in various fields. His zeal to excel in all fields has been acknowledged and highly valued in the form of national and international awards and titles and fellowships. NIMS Chairman Professor Tomar was honored with ‘Rajiv Gandhi Award 1998’ for his excellence in the field of Pediatric Gastroenterology. In 1995, he received National Award for his pre-eminence in Pediatric Gastroenterology by “Indian Academy of Pediatrics”. He received World Health Organization Fellowship for the year 1983, Commonwealth Medical Fellowship for the year 1988 and International Award for the year 1995-1996 of the International Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition for outstanding contribution in the field of Pediatric Gastroenterology, He-pathology & Nutrition.

Professor Tomar has a firm belief in the philosophical doctrine “Learn to practice and practice to learn”. He has followed this notion through-out his journey in the pursuit of excellence in various fields. His passion for quality education is reflected through his benchmarks of transcendence and brilliance in higher education sector. His commendable professional caliber is evident through his years of service at the Institute of Pediatric Gastroenterology, S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur (Rajasthan, India) along with his success at Niims University as the head and director. Professor Tomar is an active member of International & National level Gastro-Intestinal/Medical Societies like NASPGN, APPSPGAN, ISPGN, and GAI & IAP. He has served as investigator/ Co-investigator in various research projects funded by organizations like DST, UNICEF, WHO, ICMR.  He is considered an epitome of excellence in various fields like Hepathology, teaching (U.G. & P.G. medical), Pediatric Gastroenterology, nursing and dietetics.  Professor Tomar has published 72 research papers in National and International Journals. He is the author of several books and has participated in various International and national level Conferences.
